However, it has to be spent before 31 March 2018. As our boilers and heating system have long been in urgent need of replacement this was the project that was chosen. Usually this type of work would be undertaken in the summer holidays however due to the late notification of our ability to use the grant funding we needed to find another suitable time for the work to be carried out. In order to meet deadlines we have no alternative but to do an enforced closure for the 4 days attached to the October half term to allow a long enough period to get the work done. Therefore, school will close at 3.30pm on Friday 13th October and reopen on Monday 30th October. We are aware that this is not ideal and have not taken the decision lightly. However, we are aware that our boilers could fail at any time, which would force an emergency closure with no warning and no funding to repair or replace the heating system.
Work will be set for the children although it is up to parents if they wish their child to complete it.
I very much apologise for any inconvenience and have been assured that the work will be completed over the 16 days and there will be no further closure necessary.

http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/new_logo_2015.jpgThu, 07 Sep 2017 08:24:37 GMTDinner Money Newshttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-07-18-dinner-money-newshttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-07-18-dinner-money-news
We are pleased to let you know that we are moving to an online payment system for dinner money. The system will be rolled out to the whole school during the autumn term starting with current Year 2 (Year 3 from September). We are using a system called Sims Agora which will allow you to make online payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week directly into the school bank account. A letter explaining the sign up process will follow to Year 2 initially and from September to the rest of the school. This letter will contain a unique reference number to enable set up.
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/school_dinners.pngTue, 18 Jul 2017 14:06:27 GMTThe Lion Kinghttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-30-the-lion-kinghttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2017-01-30-the-lion-king
The cast is announced!

Click here for the full list
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/Lion_King.jpgMon, 30 Jan 2017 15:22:24 GMTOur Admissions Policy is set to change from September 2018http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-12-14-our-admissions-policy-is-set-to-change-from-september-2018http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-12-14-our-admissions-policy-is-set-to-change-from-september-2018
Please look at this consultation document for more details.

Walmsley School Admissions Policy- Consultation Document
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/new_logo_2015.jpgWed, 14 Dec 2016 12:12:32 GMTChildren in Needhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-11-25-children-in-needhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-11-25-children-in-need
We raised £454.50 for Children in Need!

Well done everyone!
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/Chn_in_Need(1).pngFri, 25 Nov 2016 09:06:41 GMTMore shoe boxes have arrived!http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-11-01-more-shoe-boxes-have-arrivedhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-11-01-more-shoe-boxes-have-arrived
We now have more shoe boxes so pop to the office if you would like one
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/ShoeboxHeaderF[1](2).jpgTue, 01 Nov 2016 14:58:52 GMT£833.23 profit made from School Disco!http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-11-01-833-23-profit-made-from-school-discohttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-11-01-833-23-profit-made-from-school-disco
We are thrilled to announce that the School Discos held before half term raised the whopping amount of £833.23! This brilliant total will go towards the purchase of one of the Clevertouch screens. As you know we are having a huge fundraising effort at the moment to purchase a screen for every classroom. This amount brings us a step closer, thank you to our brilliant PTA and everyone who supported us on the night.
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/thRD242U43.jpgTue, 01 Nov 2016 14:40:07 GMTWalmsley Bears for Salehttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-10-05-walmsley-bears-for-salehttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2016-10-05-walmsley-bears-for-sale
One of our brilliant PTA Mums, Heidi Adamson, is making 'Walmsley Bears'. We have 3 samples of the teddies in the office if you want to pop in and have a look! Since then, the scheme has become a national project supported not only by Rotary Clubs but also by individuals, schools, companies and churches. The gift of a shoebox that contains toys, toiletries, educational items or household goods is a drop of happiness to the people of Eastern Europe who live in a world of poverty. For many, it will be the first present that they have ever received and it lets them know that somebody, somewhere cares. As well as Romania, shoebox gifts have been delivered to Belarus, Ukraine, Bulgaira, Albania, Croatia and Kosovo. They are gratefully received by children and teenagers in orphanages, hospitals and by children living on the streets. Adults in hospital, disadvantaged families and women’s refuges have also received them as have older people in hostels with no supporting families.

Representatives from Turton Rotary Club came into school yesterday to speak to our children during assembly to explain the scheme to them. If you would like to take part please call in at the school office for a shoebox. Boxes can be filled with: Toys such as ‘Matchbox’ type toy cars, small bouncy balls, jigsaws, fluffy toys, dolls, colouring books, felt tip pens, Lego, yoyo’s, bubbles etc. The type of contents are indicated on the box top. In the case of toys, additional information as to the suitability for boy or girl, along with age group is also indicated. A card with the senders name and address, along with a photograph is also a nice thing to include. Teenagers- Please remember boxes for teenage boys and girls up to the age of 18. Such as: make-up, toiletries, sportswear, scarf, gloves, hat, writing materials, deodorants, comb, mirror, football memorabilia, etc Household Goods such as hand soap, toothpaste and brushes, envelopes, letter paper, biro pens, etc. This box is also good for older folk, especially if a warm scarf or a pair of gloves is included. Toys are especially appreciated, since these boxes can be used for Christmas and birthday gifts. Please do not mix the contents of the boxes since this makes distribution difficult. Above all, the contents should be of good quality, remembering that the recipient will be opening the box in eager anticipation, and especially with the toys for the children, quite possibly the first real gifts they have received for as very long time. Food –PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE FOOD IN ANY OF THE BOXES Filled boxes may be handed back in at school during the first week back after half term, week commencing 3 November.

Click here to visit their website...
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/ShoeboxHeaderF[1](1).jpgThu, 16 Oct 2014 14:42:04 GMTFootball Thrillerhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-10-16-football-thrillerhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-10-16-football-thriller
Yesterday the awsome footballers of awsomeness (from Walmsley) drew 5-5 with Hardy Mill.Aaron scored 2 goals,Ben scored 2 goals and Nathan scored one.

In the first five mins Walmsley were 2-0 down duh duhh duhhh !!!

Then unexpecdly Aaron scored amazingly in the bottom left corner and it was 2-1 to Hardy Mil.Then Nathan scored fantasticly in the bottom right corner ,it only just went passed the keeper finger tips, then it was 2 all !!!

In the second half Thomas, the keeper, fouled no.7. We had lots of lessons on it and it was very hard work but definitely worth it. Before the half term our teachers Miss Browning and Mrs Mullen told us to think of our teams and write down any ideas we had however crazy they were as it was quite early into the project.

After the half term all of us had managed to sort ourselves into groups maturely like young adults. We started to get our ideas together and think about how we could produce our product. We also thought long and hard about whom we would be selling our product to and why they would want to buy it. After that we prepared our power points to present to the dragons who would then decide how much money they would loan to us. Everybody did exceptionally well and the dragons were very impressed.

After that all the teams started buying the products which they would need. Alot of people got free things off amazing big companies like: Kfc, McDonalds and starbucks just to mention a few. We are all very grateful to these companies as they inspired year 6 and also gave us a boost to our companies.

It then finally came down to the summer fair. Everyone was extremely excited to say the least. The weather was gorgeous so it was a turn out.

At the end of extremely careful counting the piggy bankers won well done!

Thank you to all the teachers that made this wonderful experience happen including Miss Browning and Mrs Mullen especially! You are amazing!

Report by Olivia
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/Business_Enterprise.jpg-largeTue, 24 Jun 2014 16:03:53 GMTYear 4: Bright Sparks Electricity Workshophttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-06-24-year-4-bright-sparks-electricity-workshophttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-06-24-year-4-bright-sparks-electricity-workshop
Yesterday we leant all about electricity with Mrs O’Reilly who works for Electricity North West.

She told us what her company does and how it helps and she taught us what conductors and insulators are for. Then we went back to our tables while Mrs Lindley handed out some circuit boards. When we got in our places she asked us if we knew what electricity can turn into. There are four forms: movement, sound, heat and light.

Then Mrs O Reilly told us how to work a circuit board and then we explored how to turn a light bulb on using the switch. Next she asked us if we could work out how to put two light bulbs on. After we worked that out we tried to do three light bulbs and so on but only a couple of people succeeded but for the people who didn’t she showed us.

We learnt about what the word voltage means and what batteries do and that our homes and schools are powered by mains electricity which is 230 volts! After play a photographer came and took some photos of us while we were working on the circuits and these pictures will go on the Electricity North West website, and might get printed in the newspaper! Then we tested which materials are conductors or insulators. When we got back from dinner there were buzzers and motors in our places, we attached our circuit boards to the buzzers and motors which was really exciting! Luckily everyone’s worked. Next we got some traffic lights which attached to the circuit to see if they turned on and we had to work out how to make them change. When everyone took the wires off the circuit we went out to play, and finally we watched a really important movie all about how dangerous electricity is, and that we must NEVER EVER go into an electrical substation!!

We all had a fabulous day with Mrs O’Reilly and learnt lots. Thank you Electricity North West, we hope you come back again to teach us more!!

By Harry and Ruby

http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/Bright_sparks.jpg-largeTue, 24 Jun 2014 11:56:27 GMTCinema Treathttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-06-19-cinema-treathttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-06-19-cinema-treat
Best Attendance Treat
Year 5 visit to Cineworld
19th June 2014

After having the best attendance in school, Mrs Carr promised us a special treat. The fun of the trip started the moment we got on the coach (4:30am), as we travelled down to Dover. When we boarded the ferry we couldn't wait to get on deck where we left the White Cliffs as we sailed to France.

On arrival at the Chateau, we bundled out of the coach and were greeted with a warm welcome by the helpful instructors. We ran to our rooms then had the grand tour of the grounds. After our evening meal we did our first activity - scavenger hunt. It was filled with riddles and mayhem.

On our first night we got our torches out and had a light party. We chatted to our friends as we drifted to sleep.

The following morning, we were excited to wake up in France. After breakfast we went on a walk into Rue, the local town. Full of stories and facts we learnt about the history of the Chateau and the town. Our favourite story was about six french men who managed to escape the Nazis using spoons to dig through the wall.

We were then given the opportunity to go to the market. Where we bought lots of wonderful things: Eiffel Towers, caps, sweets, nail varnish and loom bands.

After lunch we spent the afternoon in the lake rafting and kayaking. We had a wonderful time getting wet. Mr Catterall was unable to stand up on his kayak for more than 3 seconds and fell in in many times. We built fantastic rafts that floated first time.

That evening after dinner, we went on an evening walk. Lots of games were played including: Wink Murder, Splat, Smile If You Love Me and Ouch. It was such a giggle, we laughed so much. The laughs carried on into the evening as we dressed up in our rooms doing our very own fashion show.

On the Sunday we spent the day in the woods doing some amazing activities. We abseiled down a tower; built towers using crates; conquered the obstacle course and learnt how to shoot arrows. It was such a fantastic experience - using team work, facing our fear and learning new skills. Mrs Carr abseiled showing great courage and Mrs Hitchen joined in with the archery.

That night, everyone dressed up smartly for the disco. Perfume was sprayed, nails painted and dresses worn. Even the boys were well turned out. The disco was fab. We danced the night away and celebrated Tom's birthday and ate cake. We went to bed tired and happy.

In the morning we were sad it was our last day but were determined to still have fun. After packing our cases, the instructors played Chateau sports with us. Beach volleyball was our favourite. After lunch we boarded the coach and waved a fond farewell to the Chateau.

Au revoir Chateau du Broutel.

Click on the photographs below to view the France photo galleries!

Friday 13th June - 4am start!

Friday 13th June -

4am start!

Saturday 14th June -

Tour of Rue

Saturday 14th June -

water activities

Sunday 15th June -

Crow's Nest and Abseiling

Sunday 15th June -

More activities!

Sunday 15th June -

Archery and Obstacle course

Sunday 15th June -

Disco

Monday 16th June -

Fun, games and goodbye!

{vimeo:98429016}
http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/news/image(2).jpgTue, 17 Jun 2014 08:43:42 GMTWorld War 1 Weekhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-05-19-world-war-1-weekhttp://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/news/latest/2014-05-19-world-war-1-week
As this year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One, we felt it was important for us to learn about the conflict here at school. As such, on the week beginning May 19th we held a History Week throughout school, during which our lessons were all themed around the First World War. We learned a huge amount, and despite the tragic nature of the topic, we managed to have some fun too.

The infants enjoyed an exciting drama workshop, complete with costumes, pictures, artefacts and music. Some of the children were chosen to dress up as key figures from World War One; they looked fantastic! Years 1 and 2 marched through the hall listening to music from the era, waving flags and cheering the soldiers along. They looked fantastic! They also spent time in classes finding out about propaganda posters and soldiers ration packs. Reception also learned about ‘life long ago’, and had the experience of rationing gummy bears. Some of them managed to save all fifteen of their sweets until the end of the week! Well done Reception!

Years 3 and 4 had a wonderful time meeting Private Steve and Captain Tommy. We all thought they were very funny! These two soldiers, in full uniform, spent time showing the children how they prepared to go and fight in the trenches. The classes learned why the conflict began, how soldiers worked as a team to protect themselves and how to guard against a gas attack. They tried on a real gas mask from World War One (it looked quite strange!) and some of them even held a real bayonet. The three classes of the lower juniors also worked with Mrs Cox to make poppies of remembrance out of fabric. They were quite tricky, and we were all so grateful to Mrs Cox for showing us what to do.

As well as reading Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful, the children of the Upper Juniors worked with poet and author John Malam, finding out about Corporal Horsnell from the Lancashire Fusiliers. Corporal Horsnell was a real soldier who fought during World War 1. Years 5 and 6 spent time reading diary extracts and letters sent from the front line. These artefacts inspired them to write their own ‘letters from the front’, some of which were very moving indeed. They also spent time during the week thinking about the bravery and selflessness required of all those involved in various conflicts around the world. Year 5 walked to the War Memorial and laid a wreath on behalf of all of us here at school, and Year 6 made medals showing personal attributes they associated with the soldiers of World War 1.

We had a fantastic week learning about this important aspect of our history. All of our work has been put together to make two wonderful displays in school, showing the broad range of activities we covered during the week. We hope you like them!

Click on the photograph to see our WW1 photo gallery:

http://www.walmsley.bolton.sch.uk/images/1024x1024s/news/SANY2383.JPGWed, 21 May 2014 11:04:20 GMT
